NY State Conservative Party Backs Ed Mangano!!!
11/1/09
Another Suozzi move backfired....
In an unusual move, State Conservative Party vice chairman Allen Roth of Rockville Centre announced on Friday that he is in favor of Republican Edward Mangano - and against Conservative candidate Steve Hansen - in the race against Suozzi. Roth jointly sent a letter to county party members with longtime Conservative activist and author George Marlin of New Hyde Park, explaining their position and, in part, citing Hansen's job in the Suozzi administration.
ALERT REPLY: In the short-answer portion of last Tuesday's county-executive debate at Hofstra University, Mangano and Suozzi said when asked about "gambling at Belmont racetrack" that they support it. Only Hansen noted that gambling already exists there - before discussing what the question was clearly about: Casino-style wagering.

Undressing The Emperor
A retrospective analysis of the past 16 years of Tom Suozzi
Written by Long Island Press on Oct 29th, 2009 and filed under Featured, News.

Eight years as mayor of Glen Cove, eight years as Nassau County Executive. In stark contrast to Long Island’s lone daily newspaper’s recent resounding endorsement of Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi for what would be his third term as the county’s top elected official (an endorsement which failed to mention the nearly $200,000 in campaign contributions Newsday’s parent company Cablevision, its political action committee and owners, the Dolan family, have donated to his political aspirations since 2006, according to New York State [NYS] Board of Elections financial disclosure records), we at the Press thought we’d be a little more judgmental rather than hand out a free pass. While Suozzi has made no secret of his intentions for higher office—stating during a public debate against former NYS Gov. Eliot Spitzer during his failed bid in the 2006 Democratic gubernatorial primary that he’d like to be president one day—do his past policies back up those ambitions? Or should Nassau’s newly renovated $60 million legislative complex and executive suite serve as his final, albeit ornate, political resting place? We thought we’d have a little fun with this. Enjoy!

The debate format included a three-minute introduction by each candidate, two minutes for audience questions, one-minute questions in the lightening round and a three-minute conclusion.

Suozzi's Budget....Need I Say More?
10/2/09
What's the rush to push this budget through? Why is it being "held back" from the media?
Perhaps it's all the negative points NIFA brought attention to?
The budget process in Nassau County has a slapdash feel to it this year.
Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi released the $2.6 billion spending plan on the morning of Sept. 15, but his aides were hard-pressed to come up with an actual copy of the budget.
They found two, and grudgingly gave one copy to Newsday just before the news conference started, but a News 12 reporter saw the document and demanded his own.
The Newsday reporter, having committed it to memory, surrendered his copy to News 12.
Suddenly, last week, a rumor began that the legislature would approve the plan this coming Monday, Oct. 5th, well ahead of the Oct. 30th deadline.
The theory going around was that with Legis. Roger Corbin (D-Westbury) scheduled to go on trial on tax charges on Oct. 19, the 10-9 Democratic majority wanted to rush it through.
Oct. 19 was also the next scheduled meeting after Oct. 5th, and the last scheduled meeting before the deadline.
Early this week, legislative and executive branch sources indicated there would be a vote Monday, or perhaps at a special meeting Oct. 16th, the Friday before Corbin’s trial was to begin.
Then, the judge ruled Wednesday that the start of the trial would be delayed until Nov. 30th, and the same sources started to back away from their prediction of a Monday vote.
In the wake of the ruling, some sources said the plan was to push the budget through next Monday anyway, but others said it might be better to delay and give the impression of being more deliberative.
But confusion continued as the legislature tired to shoehorn all of its budget hearings into one week.
Suozzi Refuses Mangano's Request For TV Debate!

Is Suozzi Running Scared? Can't "clear schedule" to Debate His Opponent? Read Between The Lines...
Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi has refused a request for a televised debate this week with his Republican opponent, Legis. Edward Mangano of Bethpage, both campaigns confirmed Wednesday. That leaves Suozzi, a Democrat running for a third term, with only one confirmed debate with Mangano, on News 12 on Oct. 28, which is six days before the election.

"Tom Suozzi continues to run away from his record . . .," Mangano said. "He refused to deliver a charter-mandated State of the County address in March and now he refuses to confront me to debate the issues."
Few Smiles For Suozzi Budget

Seems As Though His Fiscal Mis-management Is No Longer Un-Noticed?
NIFA Report Doesn't Lie...For an election-year budget show, it was a bummer. There were no easels, no pie charts, no bar graphs, and Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi talked right through one of his stock laugh lines — something about how his 2006 run for governor didn’t work out well for him, nor the guy who beat him, Eliot Spitzer.
There were few of the Suozzi aides and deputies that normally pack the room for these events. The only top deputy in the room for a while was Thomas Stokes, who had to be there because he is the deputy county executive for management, budget and finance.
Contribute To Suozzi's Campaign And Get A Tax Break??

Company With County Contracts That Contribute To Suozzi's Re-election Campaing Are Getting Tax Breaks?
The Nassau Industrial Development Agency's approval of a tax benefit for low-income housing developer Omni New York Llc came four months after the company contributed $15,000 to Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi's re-election campaign, according to public records.
Omni New York made the contribution on April 30, 11 days before it submitted an application for a partial tax abatement known as payment in lieu of taxes, or PILOT, records show. The county executive appoints the IDA board members.
INCORRECT TAX ASSESMENT IS A CRISIS FOR ALL TAXPAYERS!

Nassau's Broken Tax Assesment System Is Sending Us Into A Spiral of Debt...
As a result of the County’s policy of borrowing to pay certiorari (tax assessment) claims, it is already carrying approximately $150.6 million in debt service costs in FY 2009 solely related to its certiorari (tax assessment) program. This constitutes almost 6% of the County’s total budget for its Major Funds. NIFA report – pg 27

Nassau Is Spending More Than It Taxes?? How Could That Be??
Nassau Spends even more than it Taxes State - watchdog agency warns Nassau’s “use of bond proceeds and off-budget reserves to pay operating expenses masks an imbalance many would characterize as a deficit”. Even the Comptroller admits the structural deficit has grown in each of the last FOUR years. See NIFA report page 7
